Concept and Development (Late 1980s):
The idea for the Viper originated in the late 1980s when Chrysler executives, including Bob Lutz and Tom Gale, envisioned a modern American sports car that could compete with European sports car manufacturers like Ferrari and Porsche. The project was initially a concept car but gained enough attention and support to move forward with development.
First Generation (1992-1995):
The Dodge Viper made its debut as a production car in 1992. It featured a massive 8.0-liter V10 engine producing 400 horsepower and 465 lb-ft of torque, mated to a 6-speed manual transmission. It had a minimalist interior and a lightweight body with a distinctive long hood and low-slung design. The first-generation Viper was a raw, high-performance machine, lacking modern amenities like air conditioning and airbags.
Second Generation (1996-2002):
In 1996, the Viper received its first major update with the introduction of the second generation. The V10 engine was now producing 450 horsepower. The car also received some refinements in terms of suspension and handling while maintaining its signature aggressive look.
Third Generation (2003-2007):
The third generation Viper, introduced in 2003, saw further improvements in performance and handling. The V10 engine’s power was increased to 500 horsepower. Dodge also introduced the Viper SRT-10 Roadster during this period, offering open-top driving.
Fourth Generation (2008-2010):
The fourth generation Viper, known as the Viper SRT-10, featured a more modern and refined interior while retaining its monstrous 8.4-liter V10 engine producing 600 horsepower. This generation also saw the introduction of advanced electronic stability control systems.

Fifth Generation (2013-2017):
The Viper returned in 2013 as the SRT Viper. It featured a more aerodynamic design, a more powerful 8.4-liter V10 engine producing 640 horsepower, and various performance enhancements. This generation also marked the return of the Viper to competitive racing with the Viper GTS-R in the American Le Mans Series.
Final Years and Discontinuation (2018):
In 2015, the Dodge Viper received a slight refresh, but it faced declining sales and increasing emission regulations. Unfortunately, Dodge announced the discontinuation of the Viper after the 2017 model year, marking the end of its production.
